RFID: Opportunities for the industry

For the past year, IATA has been exploring the use of RFID not only in baggage handling but in inflight services, aircraft turnaround and parts. Find below our findings regarding benefits, conclusions and the next steps ahead.

RFID for baggage management

StB is pleased to share with you the RFID for baggage handling business case. In it, you will find the benefits analysis for airlines of implementing an RFID system. Additionally, read the Transition plan for baggage which details when an industry move to RFID could take place.

These documents show that whilst RFID brings benefits, the industry can do more to improve baggage handling. Thus, the work and knowledge acquired through this work will now be used to launch a Baggage Improvement Programme, which aims to analyse the causes for baggage mishandling and develop a set of solutions to tackle these. The programme will be launched in 2008.

RFID for inflight

This project aims to deliver guidance to airlines and caterers on the use of RFID for the management of catering trolleys. IATA has completed a high level business case, available on the Support Portal, detailing benefits over US$400 million. Given this positive preliminary analysis, IATA identified the key requirements and process steps in a catering operation--all available on the StB Support Portal.

This is a fundamental step in preparing for a trial of the RFID technology, due to take place this summer with a major European carrier and caterer using passive RFID tags in the UHF band. The trial objectives, scope and requirements will be delivered in August. The trial's main results will be included in a detailed industry business case to be produced before the end of the year. Additionally, a Recommended Practice will be delivered at a later stage.

RFID for parts management

An opportunity analysis document is now available on the StB Support Portal. This work analysed the challenges and opportunities involved in parts management and the potential for the use of RFID in the processes.

Despite the fact that RFID can increase productivity and reduce parts holding, the limited scope of parts to be tagged (only 700), makes the introduction of RFID not worth the investment until the scope is broadened.
