Safety and Security

Safety

Safety is the promise the aviation industry makes to the billions of people who fly annually. Despite these financially challenging times, we are committed to non-stop improvement in safety.

The IATA Six-point Safety Programme reflects the new strategic direction that IATA has taken to ensure that these goals are met. Established in close cooperation with the airlines, the Programme focuses not on one, but on a system of areas that need to be combined to improve operational safety.

Security

While safety aims to reduce the number of involuntary accidents and improve air transport reliability, the focus of aviation security is to prevent voluntary acts that aim to harm and acts of unlawful interference.

Therefore, IATA's main objective in security is to ensure that international security requirements are mutually accepted between States. IATA strives for the implementation effective and cost efficient security measures based on threat assessment and developed to be best suited for the specific operational environment in which they are put in place.  Security measures should prevent acts of unlawful interference, all the while minimising the negative impact on passenger and cargo flows.

Facilitation

Facilitation on the other hand, is about reducing unnecessary regulation and improving customs and immigration procedures to expedite the movement of people and goods across international borders.  Acceptance of internationally recognised facilitation standards and recommended practices is a great contributor in stimulating the global economy as it facilitates international trade.

Together, security and facilitation aim to find the ideal balance between securing the aviation environment and ensuring that the inherent speed of air transport and the passenger experience are not negatively impacted.
